I’ve been called, “The Betsey Johnson of Cakes” by several people and thought it was very interesting slash awesome how I was asked to do a cake for her for Fashion’s Night Out. It’s crazy how the Universe works sometimes. It was definitely meant to be. When I heard the news, I was SO excited. A: I heart her (who doesn’t?) and B: her design aesthetic is totes up my alley.
I had so much fun designing this cake. I didn’t want to take it too literally (as usual) by putting her dresses on the cake. I was inspired by everything that her brand has to offer. I wanted to put some of her signature looks on the cake and make an amalgam of Betsey amazing-ness put together onto one, yummy canvas. You could see her jewelry, her nautical designs, the famous lips on her logo and some of her signature patterns. Of course, I gave it my Lush style and design influence. I also made my signature designer cupcakes and cake pops, dusted in edible glitter, called, “Disco Dust” to go along with the cake.
The girls and I painted the town pink and took a tour of Fashion’s Night Out in L.A. Unfortunately, we took too much time enjoying ourselves with Margaritas and fun stories at The Pink Taco, so we didn’t get to see everything. Our night started off with going to the Betsey Johnson store, where my cake was displayed. It was a lot of fun hanging out with our new BFF’s who work there: Monica, Samy, Tessie, ‘n’ Jenna. LL Cool J was also there on the red carpet at the Fashion’s Night Out event at the Century City Mall, where a lot of events were occurring, including a fashion show and an exhibit by FIDM. Then we went to Beverly Hills to support Cara’s friend who works at Van Cleef. The girls had a chance to try out some of their high-end jewelry along with a photo shoot.
I had so much fun and look forward to FNO every year! A huge thanks to Cara, Hawlie, Diana, Rehonna, and Erin for coming out to support me. <3
